In aviation, training and hands-on practice are key elements to professional growth. Pedro Peixoto, an aircraft engineer and instructor from Portugal, shared his experience undertaking on-the-job (OJT) training with Magnetic Training in Tallinn.

Let’s start with a short introduction. Can you tell us about your experience in aviation?

Pedro: I have worked in aviation for 18 years in Europe and the Middle East and have experience working on commercial, business, and military aircraft. But coming back to the start – I kicked off my aviation career in Portugal as a B2 aircraft engineer. After ten years, I moved to a leadership position at one of the largest airlines in the Middle East, taking the responsibilities of leading a team of over 45 people. 

However, when the pandemic hit, I was made redundant—that inspired me to stir my career in a new direction and dive into the world of lecturing. It did not stop me from learning by myself, though — as a lifelong learner, I decided to continue working on getting B1 qualifications, too, and that’s what brought me to Tallinn.

What, in your opinion, was the main factor that made you decide to do OJT with Magnetic Training?

Pedro: Although I contacted a few maintenance organizations, the speedy response and smooth communication with Magnetic Training made a lasting impression. I received a very detailed explanation of the whole OJT process, so it was not hard to make a decision. Also, the fact that there are always 4 or 5 aircraft undergoing heavy maintenance checks, played a big part as it gives the opportunity for trainees to work on different aircraft zones throughout the program.

And what would you say are the most important aspects when choosing an OJT program?

Pedro: As aviation is an extremely regulated industry, it is crucial to undergo OJT in an organization that is fully compliant with international regulations, has all the necessary approvals, and has been working for at least a few years. Organizational culture and aircraft availability are also important because these are the elements that make up the whole experience.

How do you evaluate your experience at Magnetic Training?

Pedro: Although the first days were quite a challenge as you had to get used to the new organization, new people, and new tasks, the adaptation time did not last longer than a week, and from that point on, the whole experience was very smooth!
